Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 lb potatoes, sliced thin
  • 1 ½ cups milk (or heavy cream)
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 1 garlic clove, grated
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried thyme)
  • 1 cup shredded gruyere cheese
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until translucent. Stir in garlic and thyme for an additional minute.
  3. Whisk in flour until smooth; gradually add milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Cook until thickened.
  4. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the creamy mixture and half of the cheese. Repeat the layering process.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes; remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden brown.
